National Science Week 2022

Client: Marine Stewardship Council

The Brief: Design and production of creative assets,
event coordination, event delivery

National Science Week is an annual Australian Government initiative that celebrates science and technology with in-person and online events, tours, school fairs, DIY science and more, all across Australia. In 2022, the Marine Stewardship Council partnered with certified sustainable fisheries in the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia to deliver fun, public events for ocean literacy. We were able to support with the development and production of creative assets for each event, including recipe booklets, signage, tote bags, colouring sheets, activity booklets, and treasure hunt activities.

We also assisted in delivering one of the events based in Goolwa, South Australia. This two-part event invited 50 school students, and 50 members of the general public, for a behind-the-scenes experience of sustainable pipi (kuti) fishing on Ngarrindjeri Country. Participants enjoyed watching a short film, a Q&A with fishers, trying to ‘pipi shuffle’ on the beach, tasting pipis cooked over fire, and hearing from local artist Cedric Varcoe about the significance of his mural Ramindjeri Ruwe Ngarrindjeri Dreamin (Dreaming of our Lands and Waters).

The Result:
There were over 500 highly engaged attendees from diverse backgrounds involved at events in Darwin (NT), Goolwa (SA) and Geraldton (WA). Participants were engaged for over 23,000 minutes, alongside media (26 articles written) and special guests (e.g. local members) in attendance. The average audience satisfaction rating across events was 85.1%.

Darwin, NT
Science Week was celebrated in Darwin with a science treasure hunt. Families were given treasure hunt maps and worksheets to learn about sustainable seafood and their local Northern Prawn Fishery.

Goolwa, SA
Events in South Australia were held in partnership with the Ngarrindjeri-owned fishery Kuti Co. and Goolwa Pipi Co. Attendees discovered the science behind kuti fishing, and how science and traditional fishing knowledges combine to sustainably harvest cockles into the future.

Geraldton, WA
In Western Australia, participants enjoyed a special tour of the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-Operative lobster facility, and learned about the science behind the sustainable lobster fishing. At a second event, attendees made their own sustainable lobster and octopus crafts.
